Undergraduate Programs: Middle Grades Education
The middle grades education (MGE) program (reference number 579):
This program leads to the Bachelor of Science degree and the Kentucky Provisional Middle Grades Teacher Certification. Graduates will be certified to teach fifth through ninth grade Kentucky students. Programs are available for certification in one or two different teaching fields.
The program requires:
- A minimum of 44 semester hours (see current undergraduate catalog) of general education courses.
- 31 semester hours of professional education courses: PSY 310, PSY 421 or 422, EXED 330, LTCY 421, MGE 275, MGE 485, MGE 490, EDU 489.
- A methods course in each certified area (3-6 semester hours) MGE 474-481.
- A computer literacy course chosen from CS 145, CIS 241, or LME 448.
- The selection of one or two specific teaching fields (English/Communications, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies). Students who choose two content areas must complete 27 semester hours in each area. Single subject certification is available in Mathematics (35 hours) and Science (36 hours). - 150 clock hours of field and clinical experiences. These hours are assigned during the professional education and methods courses.
- One 3-hour Biological Science course.
