Colloquium - Past speakers
Western Kentucky University Department of Psychology

Here's a list of speakers that have been featured in the past.

As part of the celebration of Western's centennial, the Department of Psychology Colloquia for 2005-2006 will feature graduates of the Department's B.A., M.A., and Ed.S. programs as speakers

Spring 2006 Speakers:

  • Jeff Prewitt, M.A. (I/O): Tuesday, February 15, 4:00 p.m. TPH 134. "The Platinum Rule and Other Lessons Learned AFTER Graduate School: More Tools For Your Toolkit."
    Jeff is Director of the Louisville Civil Service Board-Louisville Metro Government and secretary to the Police Merit Board and Merit Board-Louisville Metro Government. He is responsible for the recruitment function for all Louisville Metro Government and provides training on management, leadership, customer service, communication, and various human resources topics. He also facilitates cross functional team problem solving sessions and trains new facilitators.
  • Tom Dawson, Ph.D.: Tuesday, February 28, 4:00 p.m., TPH 134. "Job Opportunities in Psychology: Applying Behavioral Science Methods to Understand Jury Decision Making."
    Tom received his M.A. in experimental psychology from Western under the direction of Dr. Farley Norman. He went on to obtain a Ph.D. in experimental psychology (perception) at the University of Louisville. He works for DecisionQuest, a firm that conducts research related to legal cases and conducts trial research using a mock trial scenario. The firm also does trial consulting, witness preparation, jury selection, etc. The firm is mostly scientists and attorneys from various domains who have at least a master's degree or a JD. It has offices all over the US, mostly in the larger cities. Tom works out of the Louisville office.
  • Leslie Ann Snyder, M.A. (I/O), Booze Alan Hamilton Consulting. Thursday, March 16, 4:00 p.m. TPH 134. "From Firing Ranges, Oil Rigs, to Navy Ships, One I/O Graduate's Path to Management Consulting."
    Leslie received her M.A. in Industrial/Organizational psychology from Western. She currently lives in Washington, DC and is an Associate at Booz Allen Hamilton, a global strategy and technology consulting firm to Fortune 500 companies and the Federal Government. She plans to discuss the career path she and her classmates have taken, her experiences in health care and organization consulting, and will offer career planning tips and suggestions.
  • Karen Beavers, Ph.D. : Wednesday, April 5, 4:00 p.m., TPH 134. "Perspectives on School Psychology."
    Karen received her B.A. in psychology (Summa Cum Laude) and M.A. in clinical psychology from Western. She then went on to obtain a Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. She is currently employed as a school psychologist for in Owensboro and teaches psychology classes part-time in Owensboro for WKU.
  • Heidi McGlothlin, Ph.D.: Thursday, April 13, 4:00 p.m. "Children's IntergroupAttitudes about Peer Relationships." Location TBA.
    Heidi received her B.A. in psychology from Western and Ph.D. in human development from the University of Maryland. She recently completed a National Science Foundation postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Maryland. Heidi has authored or co-authored six journal articles, two book chapters, and 12 conference presentations.

Fall 2005 Speakers:

  • Rob West, Ph.D.: Thursday, September 15, 4:00 p.m., TPH 133. Title: Effects of Aging on Evaluative and Regulative Aspects of Cognitive Control.
    Rob received his M.A in experimental psychology from Western in 1993. He went on to obtain a Ph.D. in experimental psychology from the University of South Carolina in 1996. Rob is currently an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Notre Dame.

  • Shannon Saszik, Ph.D.: Tuesday, September 27, 4:00 p.m., TPH 133. Title: Transient signaling in the cone pathway in mammalian retina."
    Shannon received her M.A. in experimental psychology from Western in 1998 under the direction of Dr. Joe Bilotta. She went on to obtain a Ph.D. in Physiological Optics & Visual Science from the University of Houston and is currently a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Ophthalmology at Northwestern University.

  • Susan Walker, M.A.: Monday, October 10, 4:00 p.m., TPH 133. Title: Industrial/Organizational Psychology Applications at FedEx.
    Susan received her B.A. in psychology with honors from Auburn University in 1986 and her M.A. in industrial/organizational psychology from Western Kentucky University in 1990. Susan has worked in human resources for Federal Express since 1990. From 1990-1992 she was a Human Resource Planning Specialist, and from 1992-1993 she was the senior Human Resource Planning Specialist. From 1993-1997, Susan was an Industrial Psychologist in Training & Testing Technology, and since 1997 she has worked in Human Resources Operations Support as the senior HR Representative.
