Spring 2007 Speakers
- Thursday, March 8, 4:00 p.m., Tate Page Hall 134: Dr. Daniel Wann, Professor of Psychology, Murray State University. Title: "Understanding the Positive Psychological Benefits of Sport Team Identification: The Team Identification - Social Psychological Health Model."
Dr. Wann’s primary research involves studying the psychology of sport fans and spectators with a particular interest in a fan’s psychological connection to a team, spectator violence, and the actions of parents as spectators at youth sporting events. He has published two books, Sport Psychology, Sport Fans and The Psychology and Social Impact of Spectators, and has made over 70 conference presentations at local, regional and national conventions on the topic of sports fans and parental involvement in sports. Approximately 100-peer reviewed articles, five book chapters, and numerous abstracts, have made Dr. Wann one of the country’s most prolific and well-respected researchers on the behavior of sport fans.
- Wednesday, April 4, 4:00 p.m., Tate Page Hall 134: Dr. Michael Young, Associate Professor of Psychology, Southern Illinois University.
Dr. Young is a Cognitive Psychologist and is the Director of the SIU Brain and Cognitive Sciences program in the Department of Psychology. Research conducted in his laboratory spans a considerable range of interest in cognitive psychology. Recent work includes a) identifying and modeling the processes that underlie how people learn to predict future events, b) understanding people's abilities and limitations in learning about multiple causation and interactions among causes with an eye toward exploring interventions to improve accurate causal inference, c) investigating the judgment processes involved in identifying causal relationships, and d) identifying the variables that influence human's and other species' ability to determine the amount of variability present in the world.
