Swamped with reading?

Does this sound familiar?

“I have 4 classes; each teacher assigned 150 pages to be read by next week, so 600 pages no problem!”

Don’t worry, all students get bogged down with too much reading sometimes.  Here are some simple strategies that can help you wade through the swamp.

Text Study is a graphic organizer designed to aid in reviewing informational text.  A good way to tackle loads of informational reading is to complete an organizer for each chapter, recording headings, bulleted info, boldface words, captions etc…Check it out at:

Print yourself a copy of the Text Study organizer and try it out the next time you’re swamped.  Keep the organizer and use as a study aid for your next test.

Question Making Stems is another good way to get a handle on a large quantity of reading.  These question starters guide and focus your thinking while reading.  Take a look at the samples for fiction and non-fiction, then make a copy and try it out!

The last strategy is an easy, yet effective way to get the most out of your reading.  “Annolighting” is highlighting with purpose.  Have you ever tried to highlight while your reading and you get finished only to discover that you highlighted everything!  Well, get a load of “annolighting”, you’ll never simply highlight again!
