TEACHING COLLEGE STUDENTS HOW TO HANDLE BOOK VOLUME

When a student enters your classroom and you hand out the first assignment of,  “Read the first 2 chapters by Monday” and they visit the next class and find out they have to read 2 more chapters. Each class surmounts upon one another and soon that student is feeling overwhelmed and it’s only the first week of school.

How do you as a professor help them manage their volume and still keep their head above water?

Here are a few suggestions that can help your students ace their assignments and not become another college dropout.

TIME MANAGEMENT IS THE KEY!

Sit down with your eager student and help them map out a schedule to handle their volume:

  1. Ask your student if they feel like this web page suggests: http://www.aboutcollege.com/time.htm

  1. Let them take a look at how many hours in a week they actually have: http://www.collegeboard.com/article/0,3868,2-9-0-118,00.html

  1. Have them fill out a time audit chart of their schedule

Once they get a feel for what their week really looks like then you can sit down and map out when and where your college load of classes and study time can fit in!
