Vocabulary Activity

Group and Categorize

This is an excellent way to assess how well your students understand vocabulary words studied in class.  If the student does not know the meaning of the word, they will be unable to place that word in a category.

Instructions for Use

1.     List vocabulary words in Vocabulary Words box.  Usually 25-30 terms.

2.     Give each student a Group and Categorize handout.

3.     Tell students to label categories to place each term in.  Every term must be used at least once and can be used more than once.  Also, students are allowed to add more categories if needed.

Instructors can modify activity as needed.

·        Instructor can provide labels.

·        Instructor can set the amount of terms used in each category.

·        Instructor may insist that the categories must be related (similar to webbing).

Activity can be used for a variety of lessons.

·        Pre-reading activity for new story.  Then, relate back to see how terms relate to each other after reading the story and learning what the terms mean or how they are used.

·        Assessment tool to check how well students know vocabulary terms.
