Retention
If you are having trouble retaining what you are reading for your college classes, try summarizing the sections that you are to read.
You might ask what is summarizing. Summarizing is when you take the key points of what you have read and make notes of those points. You want to pay close attention to the key details and only write enough to understand what you have read.
Try Sum it Up! This is a graphic organizer that will keep on track when summarizing the material that you have read in your textbook.
You can find Sum It Up directions at http://curry.edschool.virginia.edu/go/readquest/strat/summarize.html
At this site you will also find a blank sum it up sheet that you can print. So the next time you are reading your social studies chapter and you find yourself not understand what you have read, try the sum it up sheet.
*** Hint: Pay close attention to the idea about pretending you only have $2.00 to spend on an advertisement and each word cost 10 cents. This will help you keep your summary short and to the point.
