The FORMAT of the text or other print documents used in my courses is difficult for my students.
Attention to analysis of how different texts are structured and their specific features is important in identifying and understanding key concepts in textbooks. Several strategies for teaching complex text structures range from the use of Graphic Organizers, Text Structure Strategy, Idea Mapping, Story Grammars, Story Mapping, Herringbone Technique to SQ3R. In some instances, teaching students to identify text structures can be one effective way to improve silent reading comprehension. Graphic Organizers can be useful in guiding fact acquisition, interpretation and application of text information. Idea Mapping was developed to guide spatial representation of expository text structures with a framework for thoughtfully reading expository text. The Text Structure Strategy is also designed to assist readers in recognizing and using expository text features to better understand text and recall key information. Story Grammar and Story Maps aid readers in comprehending narrative text and guide questioning in order for the reader to develop a sense of story. The Herringbone Technique is useful in helping readers identify the main idea and supporting ideas of a text or concept. The visual framework helps students identify and sort key information in the text. SQ3R provides readers with a systematic approach for preparing to read and comprehend text. Strategies: Resources:
