Master
of Arts In Education and Planned Sixth Year Program |
The
Department of Special Instructional Programs at Western Kentucky
University offers a Master of Arts in Education (MAE)
degree in Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education, Birth
through Kindergarten, and a Planned Sixth Year (Rank I) Program.
The programs are designed to prepare early childhood
educators to work with children both with and without special
need, ages birth through five years, and their families. Program
graduates are eligible to apply for the Professional
Certification in Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education
(IECE), Birth to Primary (B-5). To qualify for certification,
candidates must successfully complete the IECE Specialty Exam
and be recommended for certification by the university. Some
candidates may also be required to complete the Kentucky Teacher
Internship Program. Graduates are prepared for positions
in public schools, Head Start programs, child care centers,
and other private agencies serving young children and their
families.
The
performance-based MAE program of study requires 36 semester
hours of coursework and 240 clock hours of Field experiences.
The Planned Sixth Year Program requires 33 semester hours
of coursework and 240 clock hours of Field experiences. Approximately
one-half of the Field experience hours are completed as a
part of ongoing coursework. The culminating experience of
the program is a summer internship. During the final semester
of coursework, MAE candidates must also pass an oral comprehensive
exam.
