Exceptional Education is a Program Area in the Department of Special Instructional Programs within the College of Education & Behavioral Sciences.  Graduates in the area of Exceptional Education continue the tradition of excellence with their high levels of preparation and dedication to the profession.  In recent years, students have held leadership positions at the local, state, and national levels in the professional organization, Student Council for Exceptional Children.               

At the undergraduate level, students admitted to the program as of Spring, 2005 will major (there is no minor) in the Bachelor of Science in Exceptional Education, Learning and Behavioral Disorders AND Moderate and Severe Disabilities, Primary through Twelfth Grade (P-12). Upon completion of the 128 hour program and successful completion of the three required PRAXIS II examinations, graduates will be certified to teach individuals from un-graded primary through high school with disabilities ranging from learning disabilities, emotional/behavioral disorders, mild mental disabilities, physical disabilities as well as students who have severe cognitive and behavior disorders.

At the graduate level, students may elect a Master of Arts in Education in either Learning and Behavior Disorders P-12 or Moderate and Severe Disabilities P-12.  Admission requirements for both areas depend upon the applicant's initial certification.
