image Information Session
We would like to extend an invitation to those interested in applying to the WKU Ed.D. Program. There will be an information and application preparation session in Tate Page Hall Room 406 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm on February 11, 2010.

WKU has developed an innovative Doctor of Education (EdD) program in Educational Leadership, designed to meet the increasing demand for leadership to take P-20 education in Kentucky to new levels. The EdD program demonstrates WKU’s commitment to provide seamless career development in professional education and is intended to prepare “practitioner-scholars” who will study seminal and current theories in order to translate and apply them in daily practice.

WKU’s unique education doctorate addresses the needs of practicing professionals to develop leadership skills in cross-disciplinary settings. The goals of the curriculum are to increase candidates’ understanding of human learning, improve the organizations within which candidates work, and teach candidates to conduct career-relevant research, thereby increasing their problem-solving abilities within their varied work settings.

In order to facilitate the connection of theoretical concepts to the real-world needs of practitioners, the WKU program:

  • encourages participants to become practitioner-scholars by promoting skills and knowledge in real-world practice settings to gain scholarship and experience in applied behaviors;
  • provides doctoral students the opportunity to explore the entire range of career options in various settings so that they can make sound career choices for themselves and their students;
  • is designed with management and oversight structures that encourage inter-program, cross-program, and inter-institutional collaboration;
  • provides participation with leadership capacity to bring about changes that enhance student learning; and
  • provides interdisciplinary research preparation focused on contextually based real-world problems and education that will be central to future global competitiveness.

Leading Change for Today's Educators

Four Strands available in EdD Educational Leadership

  • P-12 Administrative Leadership: For public/private P-12 administrators who will be change agents in leading systemic reform (e.g., Department Heads, Assistant Principals, Principals, Director/Coordinators, Assistant/Associate Superintendents)
  • Teacher Leader: For teachers who want to influence and affect positive changes within local schools and districts that focus on student learning outcomes
  • Postsecondary Leadership: For educators in four-year colleges and universities and two-year community and technical colleges who want to enhance their capacity as leaders for change in their institutions. Roles may include administration, teaching, service in academic areas, student affairs and support personnel in other key positions of post secondary leadership
  • Organizational Leader: For leaders in community- based organizations and agencies that provide support and partnering to advance the educational attainment of students at all levels in the community (e.g., positions in state and federal agencies, foundations that deal with P-20, educational service organizations, directors of education in work settings, non-profit agencies that provide educational programs and partnerships, etc.)
