At Western Kentucky University the Minority Teacher Recruitment Center (MTRC) is committed to creating racially and culturally heterogeneous school districts by increasing the number of minority teachers in Kentucky classrooms. MTRC is dedicated to assisting minority students who are pursuing teacher education as a major. The MTRC is a cooperative effort bringing together the resources of the Kentucky Department of Education and area school districts. The Coordinator of the Minority Teacher Recruitment Center encourages all interested persons to explore the possibilities of the various programs. There are several specific opportunities offered through the MTRC housed in the Office of Teacher Services. The Minority Education Recruitment and Retention Scholarship Program is available to full-time students from Kentucky with a 2.5 cumulative GPA or better pursing initial certification at Western Kentucky University. Applications are available on line. The Gheens Scholars Program offers scholarship opportunities to minority students specifically from Louisville/Jefferson County and the Sullivan Scholars Program offers scholarship opportunities to minority students in their student teaching semester. Please see the coordinator for specifics about these two scholarships. The center also provides workshops to help prepare students for the PPST (basic skills) and Praxis II (content area) test and resume writing and interview skills workshops. The center also plans campus visits and recruits middle and high school students who have shown an interest in teacher education. The office also serves as a support center for minority education students.
